Landstede Hammers has strengthened itself for the coming season with 24-year-old American center Sukhmail Mathon and 25-year-old Dutch forward Ruud Lutterman.
Mathon, 2.08 metres tall, first played for Boston University in 2017 and in five seasons grew into a highly appreciated force. In the past year, he played 35 games for the Terriers and in those he averaged a double-double: 15.1 points per game versus an average of 10.1 rebounds per game. These figures were achieved by scoring over 20 points five times. He set his highest score on 17 February 2022 against Holy Cross Crusaders, as he scored 26 points in that encounter.
General manager Aleksandar Todorov is happy with the arrival of Mathon, the second American acquisition after Ryan Davis. “With Sukhmail, we are bringing in someone who is strong under the boards again. Last season he averaged 10 rebounds per game, which says a lot. But also scoring, he had his input and we are confident that he can continue that line in the BNXT League.”
Lutterman played a few games for Apollo Amsterdam in the 2015/2016 season, after which he left for the United States. There he played in college basketball for the Caldwell Cougars, active in division II. In 2020, Lutterman started his professional career with the Icelandic second-division team Íþróttafélagið Hamar and there he averaged 17.2 points in 25 games. He also averaged 8 rebounds per game. Last season Lutterman played for Italian Basket Corato and for that club he averaged 14.4 points per game.
“Ruud has developed well in recent years,” Todorov said. “He adds scoring qualities to our group of players, while he can also rebound well. We add another Dutchman to our selection and also someone who has already gained some experience abroad. We are happy with the arrival of Ruud and have every confidence in a fine and good cooperation.”
From last year’s selection, Niek van der Plas, Ralf de Pagter, Dragos Diculescu and Dion Turpijn have remained. The Dutchmen Boyd van der Vuurt de Vries, Coen Stolk and Roel van Overbeek were contracted earlier, as was the Swede Felix Terins and the American Ryan Davis. With the arrival of Sukhmail Mathon and Ruud Lutterman, the counter stands at eleven players.
